UEE 512  Acoustics and Elastic Wave Propagation

This course introduces the fundamentals of acoustics/wave propagation and a variety of applications of acoustics in engineering. Relevant principles, including vibration, plane waves, reflection and transmission, pipe resonances, muffler elements, acoustic radiation, and transducer design, will be covered. The topic is extremely relevant to solving problems related to sound absorption, wave propagation, fluid-structure interaction, piezoelectric materials, etc.

UEE 502 Structural Dynamics

This course gives an overview of fundamental concepts and emerging technologies in structural dynamics. Topics include frequency/time response of single and multiple degree-of-freedom (SDOF and MDOF) structures, Fourier/Laplace transformation, advanced signal processing, modal analysis, structural control technologies (e.g. tuned mass damper, passive/active damper), as well as sensing technologies used for structural health monitoring (SHM). The course assists UEE graduate students in grasping both theoretical fundamentals and numerical techniques needed for in-depth knowledge on structural dynamics. The course also helps to broaden students’ view with latest advancements in sensing and control technologies.

UEE 408 Introduction to Structural Dynamics

This introductory course is designed to provide students with fundamental concepts in structural dynamics and its application to civil engineering. The students gain a basic understanding of vibration characteristics of single and multi degree-of-freedom systems. This course includes hands-on experiments for students to better understand theories of structural dynamics in physical systems.

UEE 335 Structural Engineering Laboratory (Only Fall 2021)

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with an environment where they apply the principles in mechanics, dynamics, chemistry, and engineering mathematics to physical systems. Students will learn the role of structural engineer in damage assessment and material evaluation through a variety of hands-on experiments and improve their presentation skills. The course is composed of a series of lectures followed by weekly (or bi-weekly) experiments and student presentations.

UEE 337 POL: Building Collapse and Safety Inspection Techniques (Since 2022)

The course aims to develop an integrated diagnosis platform for enhancing the safety and assessing the health state of civil infrastructure. Relevant principles of mechanics of materials, structural dynamics, finite element method (FEM), and chemistry in concrete will be covered. Integrated with the principal methods used for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of structural components, data acquisition, early-stage damage evaluation, digital signal processing, life-cycles assessment will be addressed. Laboratory demonstrations will be given on each topic. The topic is extremely relevant to solving the current issues in civil engineering, particularly maintaining in-service structures in a smart way and to understanding the aspects of future urban infrastructure. It will also help students broaden their horizons in civil engineering.

COE 3001 Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

The objective of this course is to help undergraduate students (CEE, ME, and AE) develop an an ability to visualize and understand the fundamental behavior of structures and solids. By understanding the underlying mechanisms leading to stress/strain development, elastic deformation, etc, students can learn methods of computing stresses in several types of structural and machine components and build up a basic knowledge of approaches to design of structural and machine components.
